...is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Communication at the State University of New York, University at Albany and Executive Publisher and Project Director of The Legislative Gazette, the newspaper of state government. Under his leadership, The Gazette has helped to train hundreds of prospective journalists, many of whom have taken up journalism as a career. He is a syndicated columnist, and President and CEO of WAMC/Northeast Public Radio, a seventeen-facility public broadcasting network serving much of eastern New York and western New England.

For over twelve years, Chartock interviewed New York State Governor Mario M. Cuomo on his weekly Capitol Connection program heard on public radio stations around New York. He continues to host the program, which features his conversations with various New York State politicians and leaders. He is also a member of the panel on The Media Project, a syndicated weekly radio program examining the print and broadcast media, and a political commentator. He is frequently called upon to comment on New York State politics by newspapers and broadcasters throughout the state.

Chartock developed ground-breaking internship programs from SUNY Albany and SUNY New Paltz. He has won numerous awards at SUNY including the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching and The SUNY Council for University Affairs and Development Award for Educational Achievement. He was one of the first recipients of the SUNY Award for Excellence and was chosen to receive the 2006 Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Teacher from the SUNY New Paltz Alumni Association. Chartock is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate for public service from the Sage Colleges and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Western New England College.

Chartock’s radio work has been honored by the Community Radio Program Awards with a "Golden Reel Award," and he has received awards from the Communicator Awards and the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association, among others. Additionally, he has been honored by numerous community not-for-profit organizations for his contributions to the quality of life in the northeast.

Alan Chartock is married to Roselle Kline Chartock, a professor of education who has edited a widely acclaimed book on the Holocaust. The Chartocks live in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and have two grown children, Jonas and Sarah.
